Kia ora Parents/Caregivers
My brother and I used to walk to school every day. Conveniently we lived close to all three schools we attended. Murrays Bay Primary, Murrays Bay Intermediate and Rangitoto College were all about the same distance from home. Aside from an enthusiastic wasp attack and not seeing someone on their bike riding on the road we got there and back mostly unscathed.
The opening of our new path through to Ashley Reserve will hopefully open up the opportunity for many more of our students to walk or bike to school. “Active” modes of transport are good for you, help reduce traffic around the school gate and can be fun if you travel in a group with others who live nearby.
Auckland Transport will be at the gate next Tuesday afternoon helping to promote active modes. If you are waiting in the queue of cars someone may well visit to advertise the idea of parking at Ashley Reserve and walking along the path to meet your children, or stay in the comfort of your vehicle and wait for them to arrive.
As promised through our Facebook posts over the weekend we have created a video to show the path construction process. Thanks to Nathan Hutton, a budding Media Studies student at Long Bay College for putting all of this together. You can view our video by clicking here.
Once again we would also like to thank our family of sponsors who helped to make our path a reality. Firth Silverdale for supplying the concrete, Craig and the team at Placemakers Silverdale and finally Chris from Prep & Pour. Chris did the hard yards to prepare and pour the finished product. If you have a concreting job at home or work, no matter how big or small please give Chris a call on 021 118 1249 and when you do please mention you heard about him here.
With the path to Ashley Reserve half way there (our next step is a connection on the school field to make it a seamless concrete journey) we now turn our attention to the drop off zone and providing some cover. This is currently with Auckland Council to be allowed to use the berm.
I wonder if I should once again walk to school, I have done it once. After 122 people used our new path on Monday I feel I really should.

School Swimming Sports
Last Friday students aged 8 and older attended the school swimming sports day at Northern Arena. This is a challenging but fun day for our students, and it was great observing the progress our swimmers have made over the past few weeks. It was fantastic to see students displaying courage and resilience even when they felt apprehensive. Sometimes just turning up is a major milestone!
Thank you to all those parents who assisted with timing the races and recording results, we really can’t run these days without you and appreciate the time you gave us. Support from the sidelines was excellent with many family members turning up to cheer on our swimmers.

Cricket Ferns Girls Smash allows girls who are new to the game, and those existing cricketers, to enjoy cricket in a low-pressure and inclusive setting. It is an environment of fun and learning through their ongoing encouragement and game management. Our team went on Tuesday 4 March and had an absolutely amazing day. They all got a chance to bowl, bat and field, and be part of a great team atmosphere. A huge thank you to our two parents who provided transport and cheerleading for the day.

We are also delighted to welcome ten new members of the PTA for 2024, without these amazing volunteers we would not be able to have the fun school events like the Discos and Carnival. If you would like to join us, the next meeting is Tuesday 7 May, 7.00pm in the staff room.
Our goal for the 2024 year is to continue to raise the much-needed funds for the drop-off/pickup zone shelter. We are running two larger events this year: The Colourful Carnival (Friday 10 May) and The Adults Only Quiz Night (Saturday 24 August), for which we are looking for sponsors to make these events possible.
The Colourful Carnival will include “Light up the Playground” as well as stalls for fun carnival games/activities and some food and drink vendors.
If you would like to sponsor a stall for the event, please email us at longbayprimarypta@gmail.com
We are also looking for donations in the way of chocolate bars, soft toys, and novelty jars – filled with treats which can be dropped into the donation box in the school office. All proceeds from these events will go towards the shelter. Many thanks in advance.
