Kia ora Parents/Caregivers
School productions are absolutely awesome. My acting career started on the Pumphouse stage in Takapuna in Year 7 as Tom Sawyer. It also ended there.
The following year my Dad lent me a spinning plastic colour wheel that I shone on the stage through a film strip projector to change the light colours for the school show and I found my real passion – working backstage. To be fair I have done that quite a bit over the past 25 years.
The highlights of this week have been on the stage, not behind it. Our students have shone and the audiences have lapped it up. From the opening night excitement, to some of our very enthusiastic students belting out classic songs and epic dance moves, there have been gems everywhere.
There is nothing like live theatre to bring out the stress levels in the school teachers wondering how much their students will remember about what to do. Standing on the stage and facing an audience your children rose to the occasion and surpassed our wildest dreams. They worked together, memorised words, actions or both. Knew where to be when (most of the time), were incredibly disciplined waiting to go on and have experienced the thrill of a packed house (or two) cheering them loudly.
The staff have been outstanding this week (and in the weeks leading up to the show). Working hard to ensure their classes knew what to do and when. There is one thing about Long Bay Primary – if you need something done, or someone to help just ask and they come running. I can not speak highly enough of the professional way everyone has worked to ensure our children get their moment to shine. Special thanks to Nikki Douglas who not only directed the show but wrote it as well. Nikki has taken her passion for drama and crafted a wonderful show that we have all enjoyed – you have earnt your weekend Nikki, please enjoy it.
I would also like to acknowledge the contribution that Sean and Natalie from It’s My Party have made to our production. Not only working with us on staging, lights and sound but also recording the shows (they will be available to you free of charge soon) and dressing the front of the hall, complete with a red carpet. The Long Bay Primary community has come through yet again.
Thank you for being a wonderful audience and being cheerleaders and number one fans for our budding superstars. You have all earnt a weekend as well.

New Look for Kindo and ezlunch for Term 3

Kindo and ezlunch are excited to share the arrival of a fresh new look in Term 3!
With it’s improved layout and enhanced features, the interface is now easier than ever to navigate, further simplifying school life and saving you time.
So what can you expect from the new and improved versions of Kindo and ezlunch?
- A fresh, new look with better navigation and clear student selection
- Clearer cart layout showing what has been purchased for each person
- Faster and easier checkout flow for a better shopping experience
- Better visibility of which items are available and which aren’t
- New item search & sort function e.g. sort lunch by dietary requirement

Important School Reminders – Please Read
|
Absences
We are seeing an increasing amount of unexplained absences lately. If your child/children are going to be absent from school, then you must let the Office and class teacher know. This is to avoid your child/children being marked as truant.
Absences can be reported by calling the school on 09 473 6077, select option 1. Emailing the class teacher and admin@longbayprimary.ac.nz or through the school website ‘Report an Absence’.
All absences from school must have a reason so your child/children can be coded accordingly on their student record. Thank you for your co-operation.
Late Passes
We give out late passes at the school date each day to students who arrive at school after the bell has rung. This is because by the time these students get to class it is likely the teacher will have already marked the roll for the day. The late pass indicates to the teacher that we know your child is at school and it means we do not call you because they have been marked as absent on the roll.
Arrival at School
Our doors at school open at 8.30am. The time until then is invaluable for our staff to prepare for the day. While we appreciate the closure of Glenvar Road has increased travel times and traffic in general at the moment is rather appalling, the closer to 8.30am that students can arrive at school makes it easier for us to deliver the best we can for your children. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Enrolments
If you have a child turning 5 in the near future, please can you complete an online enrolment application form as soon as possible. This is to assist us with classroom planning. For all enrolments enquiries, please email enrolments@longbayprimary.ac.nz

In the last few months there have now been three instances of accidents involving our students and cars on the local roads. We are very concerned about this development and need your help. Please speak to your children about the importance of crossing the roads safely – at marked pedestrian crossings if possible. Stop, look and listen before crossing the road. Look left, right and left again, then move out to cross.
We are also taking steps at school. Our local community constable Simon Fox has been contacted about coming to school to speak to classes about the importance of walking safely and how to cross the road correctly. We also continue to work with the Ministry of Education to create an all weather path between the school and Ashley Reserve which will help as well.
The continued closure of Glenvar Road combined with our growing school roll and the weather are all contributing factors to extra traffic on our roads.

Oneroa Kāhui Ako Cultural Festival
|
In Term 3, we look forward to celebrating the different cultures represented in our schools.
The Oneroa Kāhui Ako Cultural Celebration is on Thursday 31 August at Sherwood School.
Each school is allocated 15 minutes for their performance(s) which can include two or three items. We are reaching out to our Long Bay Primary community to see if we have any parents/contacts who would be interested in taking a group of students to learn an item for the performance. For example: Chinese fan dance, Bollywood dance etc. We already have a Pasifika group going.

Year 5 and Year 6 Camp Payment Information
|
Year 6 Camp at Camp Bentzon on Kawau Island on 16-20 October.
Year 5 Camp at Kiwanis Lodge and Huia Lodge in the Waitakere Ranges on 15-17 November.
Payment options are now available on Kindo for these two camps.

Practise, practise, and oh no, more practise! Spray paint, poi and more practise. It’s been a whirlwind since the beginning of this term. With the Year 6 visit to Northcross Intermediate and the Production, it’s been the busiest week yet. For some of us it’s the first experience on a stage and it’s amazing. We haven’t even broken a leg!

We are still accepting registrations for Mathletics and it will cost $20.00 for the remainder of the year.

Once you let Jo know you’d like Mathletics she’ll arrange for a payment to be set up on Kindo. Once paid, Jo will organise a registration for your child. This may take a few days.

Sports Buzz – Term 3, Week 5
|
Kristin Winter Sports Day
Last week we had a group of students attend the Kristin Winter Sports Day. This is a tournament for our top Year 5 & 6 teams in Hockey, Basketball, Netball and Football, held at Kristin School with 10 other schools in attendance.
We had an excellent day for it – the weather was mostly fine and the temperatures were bearable. Our teams all played with great spirit and displayed excellent sportsmanship. The results:
Basketball – 2nd
Football – 4th
Netball – 5th
Hockey – Participation
Congratulations to all our teams and many thanks to the fantastic adults who were able to attend and support our teams.

Touch Rugby
Touch Rugby registrations are open for Years 1-6 via Kindo. There is a short registration time so please make sure you register your child as soon as possible if they would like to play.

Yummy School Stickers
Promotion has started again this year. Earn free sports gear for the school by collecting Yummy Stickers – sheets are available from the Office.
The Yummy Sticker company will be switching over to compostable stickers in the next few months.

If you would like to join the PTA Committee, please email us at longbayprimaryPTA@gmail.com. The commitment is 2 x one hour meetings per term to plan for fundraising, as well as helping out at events where possible. The committee is a great group of parents, who are very welcoming and committed to supporting our school. We are especially looking for a secretary to join our team, assisting with minutes and agendas for meetings.
