Principal’s Chat

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

In 1981 All Whites needed to beat Saudi Arabia by 6 goals to secure a place at the World Cup for the first time ever. They managed 5 and then won a sudden death playoff against China to go on and compete in Spain.

Rory Fallon scored against Bahrain in Wellington then Mark Paston saved a penalty to secure New Zealand a spot in the 2010 World Cup. Winston Reid and Shane Smeltz scored goals and we went through undefeated. These were all wonderful moments, however last night was something else again.

As Hannah Wilkinson scored and we survived what seemed like a lifetime before the Football Ferns won their first game at a World Cup, it was a goal that not only set the tournament alight but helped us to feel better about a shocking day after the events that unfolded in the CBD.

One thing that stood out to me was after the game when Jitka Klimkova (the Ferns coach) was interviewed and had a small token with the word ‘Believe’ written on it. Just like Brian McClennan when he used Kaizen as a motivation for the Kiwis to win the Rugby League World Cup, Jitka has a word that helps to bring her team together and focus on a common purpose. It is working well so far, and I can’t wait for Tuesday next week against the Philippines.

Believe is a great word to use. Reflecting afterwards it is exactly the sort of thing we try to do at school with your children. We emphasise coming to school and having fun, looking for and celebrating positive aspects of learning and working together. At the gate after school I ask the question “what did you enjoy about being at school today?” or “what did you enjoy about learning at school?”. There are always answers that no matter who I ask that make me feel good as a teacher when I get the response back. We must be doing a few things right.

When your children get home or jump in the car I encourage you to ask similar types of questions – working together we can help to make your children believe in themselves and their abilities.

There seems no doubt the Ferns now know they can do anything, and as a country we are with them. Our support will be invaluable to get them there and have them believe in themselves even more. There is nothing as powerful as a positive mindset.

Bring on next Tuesday at 5:30pm, it will be an awesome ride.

Important School Reminders – Please Read

Absences

We are seeing an increasing amount of unexplained absences lately. If your child/children are going to be absent from school, then you must let the Office and class teacher know. This is to avoid your child/children being marked as truant.

Absences can be reported by calling the school on 09 473 6077, select option 1. Emailing the class teacher and admin@longbayprimary.ac.nz or through the school website ‘Report an Absence’.

All absences from school must have a reason so your child/children can be coded accordingly on their student record. Thank you for your co-operation.

Late Passes

We give out late passes at the school date each day to students who arrive at school after the bell has rung. This is because by the time these students get to class it is likely the teacher will have already marked the roll for the day. The late pass indicates to the teacher that we know your child is at school and it means we do not call you because they have been marked as absent on the roll.

Arrival at School

Our doors at school open at 8.30am. The time until then is invaluable for our staff to prepare for the day. While we appreciate the closure of Glenvar Road has increased travel times and traffic in general at the moment is rather appalling, the closer to 8.30am that students can arrive at school makes it easier for us to deliver the best we can for your children. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Contact Details

If your personal contact or emergency contact details need updating, please email admin@longbayprimary.ac.nz It is very important that we have correct details on our student records.

Enrolments

If you have a child turning 5 in the near future, please can you complete an online enrolment application form as soon as possible. This is to assist us with classroom planning. For all enrolments enquiries, please email enrolments@longbayprimary.ac.nz

School Production in the Hall – Jukebox Drama

Camp Drear is living up to its name – old, run-down and boring!  Our young adventurers are curious to know if there is anything exciting at all at camp, and go exploring despite being told to stay in their cabins. Coming across an old, unused jukebox our curious cast start pushing buttons and get sucked into the jukebox’s world. The spirit of the jukebox is a mischievous character with a passion for quizzes and it’s in no hurry to let the curious students go. They are set a number of riddles which they must answer correctly if they are to have any hope of ever returning to their class mates at Camp Drear.

Volunteers Required

We Need Your Help!

This month we have five 2 metre tall pohutukawa trees being extracted from a local apartment building garden. We have said we would love to add them to our school grounds. There is a catch, we need to collect them. If there is anyone out there with a HIAB truck or similar that could give us a hand please contact John Underwood our property manager.

Oneroa Kāhui Ako Cultural Festival

In Term 3, we look forward to celebrating the different cultures represented in our schools.

The Oneroa Kāhui Ako Cultural Celebration is on Thursday 31 August at Sherwood School.

Each school is allocated 15 minutes for their performance(s) which can include two or three items. We are reaching out to our Long Bay Primary community to see if we have any parents/contacts who would be interested in taking a group of students to learn an item for the performance. For example: Chinese fan dance, Bollywood dance etc. We already have a Pasifika group going.

If you are keen to work with us, please get in touch with Tiffany Krstev at tiffanyk@longbayprimary.ac.nz

Room 7 have depicted the Maori gods who rule these domains. With a splash of dye, silver paint and inspiration from Gavin Bishop’s Atua, we’ve created Rongo-mā-Tāne, god of food grown in the ground, and Tangaroa, god of the sea.
