Kia ora everyone
Tonight is the PTA’s first movie night, and I’d like to thank all of our wonderful PTA members in advance for their considerable planning – including contingency plans for inclement weather. Thank you also to Sean and Natalie from It’s My Party, and Susan Kinghorn from Harcourts for their support. It looks to be a fun, family night out.
At Long Bay Primary we certainly value the contribution that our students make to our school, and we have a number of roles where students have the opportunity to develop their leadership. We are proud of all of the students who put themselves forward for leadership roles. I would like to congratulate Sam and Emma who have been selected as the Kapahaka kaea this year. They will also join our senior student council (which includes our Kahui Ako student leaders). The student council are meeting regularly this year with Mrs Hohaia to share ideas for improving our school environment. One of their first projects is to work with Mr Underwood to open up a new bush area for senior students to play in (dubbed Wattle Downs), and to help us make better use of the lower field by developing more soccer pitch areas. We look forward to developing these and other student ideas over the course of the year.
We have one week to go until the term one break – our last day is next Friday and we then reopen on Monday 3 May for term two. Kelly Club will be running their holiday programme during the holidays.
If you have not yet downloaded the School App, can you please do so (instructions and QR code below). We will be trialling a notification system shortly.
Next term our school will be participating in the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme, which has been developed by the NZ Police. You can find out more about the programme on https://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/info-parents-whanau
Senior Constable Wansink will also be running a parent meeting at school about the programme at 2.00pm on Monday 10 May for those who are interested.
I hope to see many of our whanau tonight at the PTA Movie Night, and wish you all a great term break from next Friday

ANZAC Day falls in the term break, on 25 April (with Monday 26 April as a public holiday). ANZAC day commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli, Turkey, during World War 1 in 1915. Close to 3000 New Zealand soldiers lost their lives during that campaign. On this day we also remember others who have served their country in wars and conflicts. The following site includes the location and times of ANZAC Day services, should If you wish to attend: https://ourauckland.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/articles/events/2021/04/anzac- (the local event in Browns Bay is listed as East Coast Bays Parade). We do have poppies for sale (gold coin donation) at the school office, and have included two of our students ANZAC poems below:
|
ANZAC Day by Zoe, age 10
On ANZAC day
I wake up to hear
The sound of a bugle
People commemorating the brave soldiers
Who went to war.
Sometimes people go to parades
And watch
The red poppies fall
All is silent
Tears drop from people’s faces
Chest’s wear bright red poppies
Remembering our loved ones
|
|
25th of April by Kate, age 8
The poppies fall
All is silent
The flags are raised
Hushed voices speak
Names are read out
Reflecting our past
Despair is in the air

Important School Reminders
|
Assemblies
Our full school assemblies are now each fortnight. All family members are welcome at the full school assembly, and the dates for these are in the newsletter and on the website calendar (next full school assembly is 16 April).
As our school has grown so much, we are now handing out the children’s certificates at their team assemblies, rather than at the full school assembly. The team assemblies are at different times during the school day to fit in with each team’s timetable. Teachers are taking photos of the children receiving their certificate and will put these on to Seesaw. If you are not yet connected to your child’s class Seesaw, do contact the class teacher.
|
Absence from School
If your child is going to be absent from school, please email admin@longbayprimary.ac.nz or call 09 473 6077, option 2 and advise the Office to avoid your child being marked as truant.
If your child arrives late to school, they MUST call at the Office window for a late pass. This is so we know they are safe.
If you are collecting your child early from school, all parents/caregives need to sign them out at the Office. Children are not allowed to leave school grounds early unless they are signed out. Where possible, please do not arrange to collect a child during break times, as it is extremely difficult to locate them. Morning tea is 11.15am to 11.45am and lunch is 1.15pm and 2.00pm.
|
School Adventure Playground
Please remember that the playground is out of bounds for all students before school. Children who are accompanied by their parent may play on the playground after school and on the weekends. Children cannot stay and play on the playground after school unless their parent is with them.
|
Before and After School Care – Kelly Club
Kelly Club is available at Long Bay Primary from 7.00am until 6.00pm in the afternoon. Please contact Kelly Club on 027 363 3329 or at longbay@kellyclub.co.nz if you have any enquiries or wish to make a booking. Kelly Club will be using the hall and Room 4 for Before and After School Care this year.

Receipts for school donations and activity charges will be sent out by email at the end of March. Thank you to those families who have already made payment.
