UPDATE – School Production – Juke Box Drama

As we need to be at Level One to have a live audience for our production, and as the Bruce Mason Centre was changing its layout which reduces the number of backstage rooms, we have made the decision to cancel our booking.
Those who had already purchased tickets should have received an email from Ticketmaster regarding a refund. I would like to thank everyone who did buy a ticket for your support.

However, the show will go on in some other format and venue. We are now looking at other options so the children all get to perform and celebrate their talent and hard work.
We will let you know as soon as things are decided, as we do need to have an idea about the pandemic response before any dates or organisation is set.

Please encourage your child/children to keep practising during the lockdown time.

Principal’s Chat

Kia ora everyone

I hope this Pandemic Level Four newsletter finds everyone well in their bubbles. I would like to sincerely thank our community for your support of the school, student learning and each other at this time. A special thank you also goes to our Year 6 teachers, students and parents for their constructive response during their location of interest alert.

School staff are working hard to keep our school systems functioning and the home learning engaging during Level Four. The weekly home learning sheet provides a guide for students and there is opportunity to meet up with their teacher and class online. I am in the privileged position of connecting with staff across the school so I know that there is a wonderful array of learning across the curriculum going on in homes across our school community – thank you all for your creativity and resilience. Please see a snapshot of home learning photos further on in this newsletter.
Encouraging our children to write each day, and to connect with the online classroom times are areas of particular focus in this lockdown, which we hope parents can support at home. We are mindful that each family has its own work and family pressures as well.

Please be aware that the school grounds are closed to all. This means no playing on the adventure playground to reduce the threat of spreading the virus. It is taped off to remind people of this.

Our school production will go ahead in some format when we return, and the Fun Run will also take place – so do keep practising for the production, and keep fit and collecting sponsors for the run if possible.

Below please find some additional information about online safety from Netsafe. And also information about a rather cool free competition that families can enter together, which was spotted by our elearning lead teacher John Keoghan for us to share.

A reminder too that the Home Learning TV | Papa Kāinga TV will take over TVNZ’s DUKE+1 daytime schedule between 9.00am and 1.00pm on week days, with programmes and lessons for children aged 2 to 11 years. DUKE+1 is available on Freeview channel 18 (or Sky channel 504). Episodes will also be available OnDemand soon after the original broadcast.

I wish you all the best in the lockdown, and will email our community when more is known about level changes.

Sports Buzz – Term 3, Week 5

School Fun Run – This will still go ahead
The School Fun Run is the major fundraiser for the school and PTA this year and we would love for everyone to get behind it.

Please note that the Fun Run will still go ahead as we can be more flexible around group sizes. We are still aiming for the event taking place on 24 September.

If all children were fundraising online it would make such a difference. All profit is going to enhancing the environment for our students, and students collecting sponsors also get the chance to earn prizes.

Yummy Stickers

This is the last term for collecting Yummy stickers, so whether you are already in full swing or just starting, there is still time to earn some sports gear for our school.

Yummy creme brulee

Smells like burnt sugar

And tastes like smooth custard.

Crack as I break the shell.

Gone in a second,

Bowl cleaned

With not a speck in it.

Message from Netsafe

The community is again relying on virtual connections to stay safe. We know that mostly people will be having a positive time on the internet, however our experience from last year’s lockdown shows that we will likely see an uptake in demand for all of Netsafe services as people settle into their routines and seek self help resources, as individuals work to minimise their own online risks and protect their personal information. Further information can be found on https://www.netsafe.org.nz/

While the community relies on the internet, we encourage people to be vigilant to opportunistic scammers, fake news and possible online abuse. Netsafe are available seven days a week to provide expert incident advice and provide support for whatever internet challenge people experience.

Our latest research on digital parenting

There’s a misconception that parents need to be tech experts to properly support their tamariki, but sharing life experiences, engaging in the activities their child is undertaking and using the tools available are an invaluable part of helping your child.

Netsafe’s latest research, Global Kids Online: Digital Parenting Strategies and Behaviours of New Zealand Parents, has found that parents of younger children are more likely to help their kids manage risk and access digital opportunities than those raising older tamariki. The research revealed as children get older, parents were less likely to talk to them about what they do. It’s important that parents continue talking to their child. Netsafe has a range of resources available at netsafe.org.nz/digitalparenting that are useful to supporting tamariki of all ages and our latest digital parenting webinar is a must watch.

Managing screen time

We know many parents worry about the amount of time their kids spend online. With many ways of connecting, learning and being entertained not all screen time is created equally. Netsafe has put some advice together to help you work out what’s right for you and your family. Learn more here.
