Principal’s Chat

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

I was paid what I considered the ultimate compliment on Monday. While deep in discussion about the quality of the pikelets being produced by the Kowhai teachers (rated as 10/10 in case you were wondering) I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. Naturally I took this in my stride and replied, a Police Officer – but I think it will end up being a teacher because my whole family are literally teachers.

As it happens this segways nicely into my task for the remainder of this term. We are about to consult with you about our 2024-2025 strategic plan. This will look different to previous plans, it will be smaller, more concise and help to drive our strategic direction for the next two years.

Part of this process involves us asking about the culture and curriculum experience of your children while they are here – and what sort of person you would like them to be when they leave. We are interested in head, heart and hands – what they think and know, the type of person they are and what they can do. We are gathering ideas from as many different members of the school community as possible (including the students) to design our plan moving forwards.

We are educating our students for jobs that do not yet exist. As we welcome Ashlee Reid and her Room 1 class to Long Bay Primary (the class of 2036), they will no doubt be excited about jobs that we have not even dreamed about. This is our opportunity to ensure the heads, hearts and hands of our students are ready for anything the world will throw at them in the future.

Be it a police officer, teacher or TV director (my third choice) your contributions to our plan going forward will be invaluable in helping to guide our school forward in a direction we can all be proud of. Please make sure you have your say when the opportunity arises. As part of this process please ask your children what they want to be when they grow up. My pick is that YouTuber will be very popular.

Important School Reminders – Please Read

Absences

We are seeing an increasing amount of unexplained absences lately. If your child/children are going to be absent from school, then you must let the Office and class teacher know. This is to avoid your child/children being marked as truant.

Absences can be reported by calling the school on 09 473 6077, select option 1. Emailing the class teacher and admin@longbayprimary.ac.nz or through the school website ‘Report an Absence’.

All absences from school must have a reason so your child/children can be coded accordingly on their student record. Thank you for your co-operation.

Late Passes

We give out late passes at the school gate each day to students who arrive at school after the bell has rung. This is because by the time these students get to class it is likely the teacher will have already marked the roll for the day. The late pass indicates to the teacher that we know your child is at school and it means we do not call you because they have been marked as absent on the roll.

Arrival at School

Our doors at school open at 8.30am. The time until then is invaluable for our staff to prepare for the day. While we appreciate the closure of Glenvar Road has increased travel times and traffic in general at the moment is rather appalling, the closer to 8.30am that students can arrive at school makes it easier for us to deliver the best we can for your children. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Contact Details

If your personal contact or emergency contact details need updating, please email admin@longbayprimary.ac.nz It is very important that we have correct details on our student records.

Enrolments

If you have a child turning 5 in the near future, please can you complete an online enrolment application form as soon as possible. This is to assist us with classroom planning. For all enrolments enquiries, please email enrolments@longbayprimary.ac.nz

Road Safety

Our School Community Officer Senior Constable Tania Wansink is coming to school over the next couple of weeks to work with classes to remind them of the importance of road safety. Tania will talk about pedestrian crossings, wearing helmets, the danger of driveways and general road sense. While she will work across the whole school there will be special attention paid to our older students. The youngest ones tend to walk with an adult to help them.

Should you notice anything on our local roads that we can pass on to Tania while she is here please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Thank you for your help to keep our children safe.

Oneroa Cultural Festival

Congratulations to our fabulous performers who represented our school at the Oneroa Cultural Festival at Sherwood School on Thursday 31st August. Thank you to our incredible parent / community tutors who made this happen for our tamairki.

Room 4

In the Kowhai team we are investigating trees and how they help us. Do you know that bark from trees is often used as a canvas for paintings? Here is one example of Australian Aboriginal art displayed in museums. Room 4 students have created their own Aboriginal paintings on paper. We can’t wait to transfer our ideas onto bark. Look out for our finished pieces!

Mathletics

We are still accepting registrations for Mathletics and it will cost $20.00 for the remainder of the year.

Please address all correspondence re Mathletics to Jo Patrick who is coordinating the registrations – jop@longbayprimary.ac.nz

Once you let Jo know you’d like Mathletics she’ll arrange for a payment to be set up on Kindo. Once paid, Jo will organise a registration for your child. This may take a few days.

Mud Colour Fun Run

The Mud Colour Fun Run is back! Long Bay Primary School is organising a Mud Colour Fun Run fundraiser in September to raise funds to enhance our outdoor areas.

The funds raised will go towards the purchase and installation of new all weather shelters around the school. Enhancing and creating all weather shelters around the school will assist in keeping our students dry and protected while waiting for their parents at the drop off zone.

Like all New Zealand Schools, we rely on fundraising and the support of our extended community to continually offer the best environment and learning opportunities for our students. Fundraising gives our children a sense of empowerment from being able to work as a large team and contribute towards a common goal. Our students will gather online sponsorship for their participation in our fantastic Mud Colour Fun Run!

How will this fundraiser work? This year we have partnered with online fundraising company Go Raise It . Collecting sponsorship online makes it super easy for everyone – no more door knocking, your child can collect more donations from further afield (friends & family living overseas, work colleagues etc) and no need to worry about handling cash!

How do I sign my child up to fundraise online? Each child can sign up for their very own fundraising web page to send out to collect online sponsorship from anyone, anywhere!

● Just go to our Fundraising Hub page at: https://longbayprimaryfunrun.raiseit.co.nz/hub

● Click on the SETUP A FUNDRAISING PAGE button

● If you need any help email help@raiseitfundraising.com for direct assistance

Multiple children in your family? No problem, all children can sit under the same email address. You’ll find a button to set up another page while logged in to the fundraising account you created first. Do I have to sign up for an online account to fundraise? We would love everyone to have an online account as this allows the school to significantly reduce the administration overhead of collecting and dealing with cash. Go Raise It adhere to strict cyber safe guidelines and this is built into our fundraising website. If you really do not want an online fundraising page, and still want to participate please check with the school office to see if you can collect cash.

Prizes: We have a great range of fundraising prizes available including spot prizes and overall fundraising prizes for classes/individuals. Please see the Prizes page linked on the Fundraising Hub page of our fundraising website.

Yummy School Stickers
Earn free sports gear for the school by collecting Yummy Stickers – sheets are available from the Office.

The Yummy Sticker company will be switching over to compostable stickers in the next few months.
